What Sounds Should My Child Be Making?
Many children enter kindergarten with sounds they cannot pronounce correctly. They all develop in their own individual ways, but there are patterns they tend to follow. Children who fall far off the developmental path may need to receive help through an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) and formal speech and language services. Children with more mild errors will often self-correct with some informal, short term help including direct cuing from the speech therapist and classroom teacher and home practice with parents. This chart can be helpful for both parents and teachers in determining whether or not a child’s errors are age-appropriate. Colored bands begin with the age at which 50% of children can typically produce a sound and end at the age where approximately 90% of children can make that sound. If you have any questions about errors your child is making and how you can help at home, please let me know.
