Speech Intervention Program
Ventura Unified School District offers a Speech Intervention Program for students with mild communication differences. This program is offered to general education students who have communication differences but do not demonstrate significant social or academic difficulties. The class is scheduled so that it does not interfere with literacy instruction. The Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for planning and implementing the curriculum. Placement and practice methods are individualized for each student, as appropriate. The Speech-Language Pathologist works with the classroom teacher and parents to reinforce and transfer skills and to provide periodic progress updates. Classes are typically offered twice a week for 30 minutes in a small group setting for a cycle of 8 weeks or 17-20 hours of service time. Students are expected to complete assigned practice at home (often homework is not assigned unless requested). If a student misses three sessions or fails to complete assigned homework, he/she may be placed on a waiting list to re-enter at a later date (I personally try to avoid this practice unless I have other students waiting for a spot in my class).
Following participation in the Speech Intervention Program, students may be monitored by the Speech-Language Pathologist, offered a continued intervention cycle, or assessed for further needs with parent approval. Appointments may be made with the Speech-Language Pathologist for individual parent conferencing and general suggestions for encouraging speech and language development are available on this website.
